Excellent news for me. Setanta USA is folding and will become Fox Soccer Plus. It looks like Time Warner will actually pick it up, but it's anyone's guess if Fox Soccer Channel in HD will start. Maybe it will as the HDs move from the 400 channels to the 1000 channels in March.
Plus, the English get blamed for poor World Cup sales, even though they are the Number 2 country in ticket sales. Germany, as well.
But England also thinks Germany's new black shirts are Nazi throwbacks. Lines like "one goose-step too far" seem rather inflammatory.
Speaking of the World Cup, ABC has decided to show the national anthems of the two teams. About time. They will also get USA-England. ESPN Classic replays all of the matches daily starting at 6:00. So, it looks like I will be unavailable the latter half of June.

Boy, Toyota finds itself in a mess. Safety concerns have caused them to stop production on several models. I just happened to hear an interview with a car expert last week and he was going on about the quality issues at Toyota.
Quality is (was?) considered a hallmark of that company. It used to be that Toyota would slowly develop manufacturing facilities in places where they wanted to expand. But, apparently that expansion had become too widespread and quality was suffering big time. They have made executive changes to stem the tide a bit, but the bloom is of the rose now. This production halt being the latest problem.

Wow. Brett Favre needs to be raked over the coals for that awful interception he threw in the NFC Championship Game. You never ever ever throw late over the middle and that's exactly the mistake he made. I'm sure he'll come up with the "Aw, shucks, I'm tryin' to make a play right there." routine, but that won't wash.
Seriously, for all the bad quarterbacking the Browns have, I doubt Anderson or Quinn make that throw. Oh, they may have tripped and fumbled, but I can't see them delivering that throw. What a disappointing end for the Vikings.

Nice game at CSU yesterday, as they completed a Wisconsin sweep at home this weekend. Yesterday, it was Milwaukee. It appeared CSU was dead at 48-34. But they scored 7 points in a row to get back in it, and eventually took a 66-65 lead with 4 minutes to go. They actually fell behind 72-68 with just over a minute to go, but Norris Cole hit a three-pointer with 7 seconds left for the win.
In a very entertaining game, CSU wins, 73-72.

Did you ever find yourself having to buy an item you normally don't think about? Because today, I had to buy a toilet seat. Now, replacing a toilet seat seems like it's mundane, and you're right. Who really wants to bother with that stuff.
First, you have to figure out where to buy one. Of course, Lowe's and Home Depot come to mind and I chose Lowe's, simply because they are closer. Next is color. Well, that's easy because I needed white. Next is brand. Well, my toity is a Kohler and why not stick with them? Next is what size. You have elongated and round toilet seats and honestly, I don't care, but you need to know which one you need. I needed round, which is slightly smaller than the elongated ones. I'm assuming your various handicapped lounges, as I like to call them, probably offer elongated. Seems simple enough, eh?
Well, go to your local outlet and there is the Murderers Row of toilets. American Standard, Bemis, Kohler. The seats displayed in all of their whiteness or woodness or biscuitness. Eventually, I was sticking with Kohler and went with a $20 round version.
Then you have to take the old one off. The joys of working in one of your favorite areas of your home. And, by God, don't drop anything. Make sure you have a wrench and adequate left hand prowess for unscrewing the old one. Screw in the new one and then you're good to go. Literally.
Makes for a nice weekend diversion.

I saw the "Book of Eli" last night. I had my doubts about this one, but it was better than expected. It really hinged on the two main characters played by Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. If Denzel had phoned this one in like "Pelham 1-2-3", this would have been a disaster. But he and Oldman sold their roles pretty convincingly and that's what put it over the top. And Mila Kunis had these post-apocalyptic look I really dug. And Jennifer Beals still looks mighty good, I say.
Highlights: Denzel and his machete play. Tom Waits and Malcolm McDowell, as ever, in cameos. And one scene where an old couple cranks up the Victrola in the desolate world. Now, I've seen enough movies to know that this is either going to be classical music or something like Piaf in "Saving Private Ryan" to remind those of days gone by. Imagine my surprise when "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward starts playing.
Anyhow, the ending was not exactly mind-blowing, but made me have more questions and, quite frankly, I don't think there were any answers. It was as if a different movie evolved at the end, but I didn't really mind.

Another weekend of football watching, so here we go with some picks.
New Orleans over Arizona. The Cardinals haven't played a bad offensive game the last two years in the playoffs, but I can't see them winning two shootouts in a row. The Saints, on the other hand, have had a lot of time to erase their lousy December/January. Saints will roll.
Indianapolis over Baltimore. I think Indy is one of those teams that can turn it on when they need to. Even with the Colts propensity to give up huge chunks of rushing yardage, it's the end of the road for the Ravens.
Dallas over Minnesota. The Cowboys will be a lot of fun to watch in this game, as the Brett Favre experiment may come to an end for the Vikings. Strange that this one got the Sunday 1:00 timeslot, as it's the best matchup of the weekend.
San Diego over New York. The Jets are a bit mouthy, but Philip Rivers sold me this year. If the Chargers get in trouble in this one, I think Rivers can will them to victory. He's that good.

It's been a long time since I've read a sportspage where I have a million things running through my head upon completion. But here it goes.
Tony Grossi grades the Browns today.
To show how bad the Browns are, 5 of the top 14 players are significant special team players (Cribbs, Vickers, Dawson, Zastudil, Pontbriand). To paraphrase George W. Bush, "He forgot Cundiff!".
Shaun Rogers at #3? "Child, please." Remains overrated by virtually everyone in this town.
Matt Roth plays 6 games and gets rated (Unbelievably in the Top 10), D'Qwell Jackson plays 6 and is not? I don't care who ended up on IR or not.
Jamal Lewis at #19? Not sure how or why.
One thing bugs me about Terry Pluto's column today. The line "You can be jaded and say that Mangini kept the job" and then lists EXACTLY the reasons why. Lerner paying for yet another ex-employee, the upcoming CBA dispute and Holmgren not yet sure he does NOT want to coach.
Why bang on Braylon Edwards? Dude is gone. Still in the playoffs, but gone.
New Tribe pitching coach, Tim Belcher, talked to Jake Westbrook about how he pitched in Puerto Rico. This always kills me. Hop on a plane and go to PR and see the guy pitch live, you don't even need a passport.
After seeing "Sugar" the other day, I will never underestimate the firing of Luis Isaac by the Indians again. From helping the Hispanic players with the English language and having a father figure around who can speak their native language and prepare them for the dos-and-donts of the majors and guide them when things don't go well, these players go through a lot. I mean how many times will you order "French Toast", because that's the only item you know how to pronounce, even though you don't like it. So, I was thrilled to see that Manny Acta, the Most Interesting Manager in the World, visted with Fausto Carmona in the Dominican. At least 15 wins this year, you watch.
Not a surprise that the Jets handled the Bengals. The Bengals offense led the league in three-and-outs and the Bengals had two of them in the first half yesterday.
Not much of a surprise that the Cowboys whipped up on the Eagles again. The Dallas front 7 is really playing well right now and may give Minnesota some fits next week. Last two weeks, the Eagles ran only 10 and 13 times against that Cowboy defense.
Today, I like the Ravens and Packers, but not sure either team will win. I think they'll be close, but not sure they can get over the hump.

A truly weird game. They were "Homered at home" in the first half by the refs (only 2 foul shot attempts by CSU) and had to go to Plan C, with only about 6 minutes gone. Second half foul shot attempts, CSU 15, UIC, 3! Complete reversal.
CSU eventually wore down Illinois-Chicago to grab a 16-point lead, 65-49, with only 4 minutes to go. Three minutes later, it's 66-63, WTF? In the last minute, CSU hit 4 foul shots for the final score of CSU 70, UIC 63.

What's killing me about the Josh Cribbs contract situation is the ignorance on the part of some Browns fans. He is under contract for three more years, so the only options he has are to play with the Browns or hold out. The only way he leaves is if the Browns cut him (not bloody likely) or trade him (not bloody likely).
So when I hear idiots say "it would be a shame if he played on a team like Dallas next year.", I mean, what planet are these people from?
In Cribbs defense, I will say, at this year's Raider game, the crowd was jacked up way beyond the norm when he came into the game. He has easily become the Browns most popular player. Certainly they cannot pay him Devin Hester money, but they should give him a bonus that will keep everyone happy and Cribbs in uniform.
And Eric Mangini must be the greatest job applicant in the world. From "worst hire ever" in October to getting a second year in January. I'd rate that about an 8 on the shock scale.

I avoided attending the Browns game today, basically because I was tired of being cold. Even so, I think Holmgren goes with his own men and we should know this week. If it happens, Eric Mangini would join Ray Rhodes as the only coaches fired in back-to-back full seasons.
