Did you ever try cooking popcorn with Coconut Oil? How about trying to find it? Anyhow, I had to get my Halloween candy from Target yesterday, mainly because I could get a pack of light bulbs over there for 50 cents (with a coupon) and I had a ton of candy coupons. So, with Giant Eagle right next door, I went over to the 117th Street complex.

After Target, I go to the Iggle and grab a rotisserie chicken and some other provisions and find myself in the oil/cereal aisle. First of all, they have a shitload of corn oil, then canola oil followed by olive oil. I even saw a small amount of peanut oil, then some sunflower oil. So, as I am mesmerized by these oils, a little kid comes by and says, "Excuse me." I thought she wanted to get her cart by, so I move away and she says, "Excuse me." again. And I said, "What do you need?"

I noticed she was with her Mom and two sisters. The mother wearing traditional Muslim garb. The girl, who I gotta say, had a lot of spunk, then asked, "Can you let us know what cereals we can buy? You know, it's kind of a second language thing.", as she gave me the head nod to her Mom who had the food stamps out. OK, now I get it.

I guess they were allowed a box (any box? sugary good ones, too?) up to the 18-oz. size or, at least, that's what their coupon said. I then realized I don't buy a lot of cereal, but those sizes were all at the bottom shelf and I told them to make sure you get the largest box you can, then I saw the WIC sticker and and had the epiphany of what they could buy.

(Later study showed you cannot load up on the Sugar Smacks. They confine you to the likes of Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Life, Special K and Chex. Looks like Grape Nuts got eliminated on the yuk factor for the kids.)

See, not all my trips to the market are bad ones. And I still can refer to myself as "Ambassador".

Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert Rally

There was talk of attending the Jon Stewart Rally in DC today. But after watching it on TV today, I'm really glad I didn't go. Truly, this was a made-to-watch-on-TV event. Although the roster of entertainers was good, wow, it kinda skewed old. I would have grumbled quite a bit if I travelled all that way and spent $ on gas and lodging to see Fr. Guido Sarducci.

Favorite Signs:

"Hawaii Birthers For Statehood"
"Sarah Palin Stole My Cane"
"I Masturbate AND I Vote"
"This Sign Mocks Extremists In A Witty And Humorous Manner"
"Bacon IS Good For You!"
"Down With Zippers"
"Colbert For Dicatator"

Clearly, Stephen Colbert had the funniest lines of the day, perhaps by design. When he interrupted Yusuf Islam during "Peace Train" and called him "Joe", I lost it. But, we haven't heard "Peace Train" that much these days and although the bit was funny (Islam with "Peace Train"and Ozzy with "Crazy Train" folded into the O'Jays "Love Train"), it might have been nice to hear the whole thing.

Setlist:

"Thought At Work"/The Roots
"Dear God 2.0"/John Legend and The Roots
"Hard Times"/John Legend and The Roots
"I Can't Write Left-Handed"/John Legend and the Roots
"National Anthem"/Four Troops (a terrific job)

(Note: Stewart takes the stage for the first time and it's 1:00. Colbert joins shortly from his Fear Bunker. Then we hear Fr. Guido Sarducci give the benediction. Skewing old, remember? Seriously, I thought Burl Ives was backstage.)

"Peace Train"/Yusuf Islam
"Crazy Train"/Ozzy Osbourne
"Love Train"/O'Jays

(Note: Like Glenn Beck, both Stewart and Colbert handed out medals. Stewart's went to: Tiger pitcher Armando Galarraga, Obama questioner Velma Hart, Wrestler Mick Foley (God, everyone loves Mick!) and Koran saver from the Internet, Jacob Isom. Colbert's went to: All the news organizations who banned their reporters from attending, Anderson Cooper's tight black T-shirt and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg.)

"You Are Not Alone"/Jeff Tweedy and Mavis Staples
"The Least That I Can Do is Care"/Kid Rock, T.I. and Sheryl Crow
"Peaceful Feeling"/Sheryl Crow
"America the Beautiful"/Tony Bennett (My God, that guy still has it)
"I'll Take You There"/The Cast

And then it's off to start my day.

The Amish. They have electricity.

It's starting already. Yusuf Islam backlash.

WTF? A tribe in the Congo thinks Bryan Ferry is a god. Not like Clapton, like a real god.

If you haven't been watching "Louie" on FX, you need to. I don't think there has been a bad episode yet. And the good thing is, it's a comedy that actually has laughs in it. I think Louis C.K. has delivered a winner this time around. One of the best new shows in a while.

So, I'm at Giant Eagle this morning and I realize I forgot my list. So, I'm standing by the place where the weekly circulars reside, scanning one before I start my shopping.

All of a sudden I hear a voice say, "Do you always block the aisle like this?". Now, mind you, I thought this was uttered by someone I might have known, because I thought to myself, WTF? But I look up and I have no idea who this person is, besides "Annoying Customer".

Then he repeated what he said, and I realized he may have a speech impediment or be a bit off mentally. So I told him, "Yeah, I do this every week when I come here." and I moved my cart slightly.

Jeezy creezy, these things happen to me all the time. Admittedly, I lean towards zero tolerance sometimes...uh...more often than not...a lot, but not "Excuse me." or "Sir, your cart?" or something similar.

"I got a threshold, Jules. I got a threshold for the abuse that I will take. Now, right now, I'm a fuckin' race car, right, and you got me in the red. And I'm just sayin', I'm just sayin' that it's fuckin' dangerous to have a race car in the fuckin' red. That's all. I could blow."

Speaking of All-Stars, Michael Lewis ventures to Houston and finds Shane Battier? Lewis has become one of my favorite writers and delivers the goods again.

Consumers are cutting their spending on food. I visit Marc's now more than ever. For instance, Ken's 8-oz. salad dressing at Marc's today was 98 cents. I had a coupon to buy two and get a dollar off. So, I got 2 bottles for 96 cents. I don't see how Giant Eagle can compete with that. Look at the continuing saga of pop prices. Giant Eagle had some 2-liter prices today at inner-city Dairy Mart prices, while offering "specials" at 3/$4.00. They also raised the 2-liter Giant Eagle brand to 99 cents. Specials were usually at $1 each, while the house brand was at 89 cents for a very long time. Even Marc's is offering more soda at a 4/$5.00 price. I don't visit the warehouse clubs, but that seems more of a luxury than ever to me. But there's always Mickey D's.

Folks are still buying Mardi Gras beads, however. Laissez les bon temps roulez!

After I trimmed some hedges this a.m., I set about to do a little grocery shopping. Mainly to get some steak at Giant Eagle. I was trying to buy some olive oil, as well. Thought for sure I had seen some at Marc's and it might be cheaper. I couldn't find it, but I did buy the 625-pack of Q-Tips there. BTW, how do those people stay in business?

Then I went over to Giant Eagle. Couldn't find any there, knew they had it though. Asked a worker, who took me to it. Why is it in the coffee aisle? Bottles of balsamic vinegar are elsewhere, shouldn't they be like peanut butter and jelly? I hate when I can't find stuff there!

Fell asleep before I could see Margarito-Cotto over the Internets. Sounds like a great fight to catch on the replay next week.

So, today I watched the Brickyard 400 from Indy. Mostly after the Indians blew a game in the ninth inning. For some reason this year, games against the Twins have fascinated me enough to watch almost the whole game. Very strange. I think the Indians have lost most of those, BTW.

As for the race. What the hell was with those tires. They called about 7"Competition Yellows" because the Goodyear tires sucked today. They could barely go 15 laps before averting disaster, so the race was kind of a dull one. Not a whole lot of racing.

That's two races where the fans at Indy have been hosed. The F1 debacle of a few years ago also comes to mind.

I'll watch Carlos Sastre take the Tour de France in a few minutes here. And wonder why Cadel Evans didn't attack in the three weeks of the race.

My kingdom for a Heinen's.

Well, how did my second-most hated place behind Time-Warner, Giant Eagle, make me angry today? I didn't go to my normal one, so let me count the ways:

I like Caramel topping, don't eat it a lot, but I had my last drop some time last year. I wanted some today. You know, the simple Hershey's squeeze bottle, that's all I'm lookin' for. Could not find it. Why, there it is with all the other ice cream stuff, like cones. IN THE DIAPER AISLE!

I also like Toasteds, you know, the Keebler crackers. Those elves make a mean three-pack of Buttercrisp, Sesame and Wheat. Go to the cracker and cookie aisle. Nothing. Oh, you got your Ritz, your Premium, your Town House, but no Toasted. Why, there it is, along with Cheez-It (the crack of the cracker world), IN THE CEREAL AISLE, seven aisles away!

Unrelated to Giant Eagle, although I'm sure they lobbied for it, the size of the Jimmy Dean Breakfast Skillet has dropped. Yes, this used to be 20 ounces of plug-my-arteries breakfast goodness, but it has dropped to 18 ounces now. Of course, the associated price hasn't dropped either.

Lastly, if I'm going to Get-Go, I always wait until I get my groceries then I go there. Being in a really fab mood, I did that today. Only to go to the pump and see that cash customers now have to pre-pay, at least at this one. Well, that's the end of my convenience, because now I have to be a math major to estimate how much I'll need to fill up. Let's see the sign says $2.99, how much do I have on my card, well, I don't know because I have to go inside. Oh, it's 30 cents off, uh, er, I dunno, give me 25 dollars. So, as I'm pumping, I realize $25 is too much and I'm able to get $22.65 in. So, I have to go back in.

Her(snidely): "Oh, you're back in, huh?"
Me (angrily): "Yep, that's the hazard of pre-paying."
Her (densely): "Huh?"
Me (smart-assly): "That's the hazard of pre-paying. How am I supposed to know what a fill-up costs?"
Her(snottily): "Well, all stations are pre-paid."
Me (disgustedly): "No, they're not. Have you ever heard of Sheetz?"

Amidst the Left Turn Guys starting today (Hello, Newman), I have been catching up on these Oscar nominations. I saw Viggo Mortensen in "Eastern Promises". I dunno, I didn't like it and I'm not sure why he was nominated. Well, he had an accent, was cut, tatted up and had a naked fight scene in a bath house. Kind of like Edward Norton, sans the accent, in "American History X". Anyhow, it's about Russian mobsters in London. So-so, at best.

Ronaldo's leg blew out, maybe, because of steroids. Hey, if Socrates believes it, I'm in.

You've probably noticed the words "cult" and "Obama" used in the same sentence a lot lately. I actually think the use of the word "cult" helps his opponents, because Americans is stupid, and they think bad things normally associated with cults. But people are fainting at his rallies. A Joel Stein column is referenced a lot these days, and it's actually quite good. The correlation to Peter Sellers in "Being There" is spot on.

I watched Pavlik-Taylor II last night via the feed from our good friends, the Chinese, and it was an OK fight at best. Yeah, Pavlik threw more punches, but both fighters were never in serious trouble. I don't know if it was that the fight was at 166 pounds or that it was a non-title match, but I hope there is no third bout here. Let's move on.

I guess Taylor proved he could last 12 rounds, although I thought he tired badly after the tenth. Pavlik continued to have a high work rate, lasted 12 rounds, and did what he needed to do to score points. I scored it Pavlik 115-113, with Kelly winning the final two rounds. It was a hard bout to score, as it was fairly even. There was more action in 7 rounds last time than last night's fight. I guess I'm a little disappointed and would be moreso, if I had purchased the PPV.

I'd like to see Pavlik fight closer to home and hopefully, have a shot at some quality opponents. Pavlik wins the unanimous decision.

Word of advice. Do not go to Giant Eagle on Super Bowl Sunday. You'd think it was Y2K or something going on. While contemplating if Michigan is the new West Virginia, and irked because I could tell the guy behind me at Giant Eagle counted my socially acceptable 16 items in the 15-item express lane (4 cans of chicken broth and 3 oranges. Zip it, pal!)...

I was over at Giant Eagle today. The dreaded slow cashier syndrome is in play. This isn't time for the social hour, be cordial, but keep the line moving. Today's cashier seemed nice, but wow...shut up.

She sees someone in the next (not her line, mind you) line and says. "There's my ex-neighbor. Hello, ex-neighbor." The guy says he isn't her ex-neighbor. "Is your name Mark?" "Nope." "Do you have a brother?" "Yes." "Is his name Mark?" "No." At this point I'm mentally pleading with the customer to shut up and not play along as I'm next in line and starting to get a wee bit impatient. "Do you have a cousin?" almost made me leap over the lane with the people's elbow, but I only stared at the woman. Finally, it's my turn.

I was wearing my "Compton is for lovers" t-shirt and I could tell she didn't get it and I was praying she wouldn't ask about it. She didn't. But she's just too slow, as she wonders aloud to no one there, "Is it 9:30 yet?". This is at 4:00 and I guess she's still got a long way to go on her shift. I think, quit talking and maybe it'll go quicker, because each time you look up, I'm still here. As we concluded, she has this gem, "You can save 20 cents on your gas. You're not doing your part, so I can keep my job." I guess that's supposed to be funny. Maybe I need the self-checkout line without humans.

Here are the remaining movies considered the Best Tearjerkers. I haven't seen all of these, but I am curious about a few that are on this list that didn't affect me. "Ordinary People" was one of those at #19. "Love Story"...ugh. I have never seen "Titanic" at #16 all the way through, but I have it on good authority that waterworks are indeed induced. "Life is Beautiful" at #15 was shocking for me, but Best Friend had the tears at that one. Jeff, "Old Yeller" is #12, you happy? What a concept, boy shoots dog. Even as a non-pet owner, it's impossible not to sob uncontrollably at that one. "Field of Dreams" at #10 depends on my mood. It didn't affect me at the theatre, and I was there with my Dad for that one! We must have been ready to bolt to beat the crowd or something. "Brian's Song" at #7 goes without saying. The only football movie worse is "Something for Joey" and yes, I'm still campaigning for that one. "Brokeback Mountain"? Hey, I was more terrified by the whistler before the movie. "You Are My Sunshine", indeed. "It's a Wonderful Life" at #5, no argument there. "Bambi" at #2? I must have been too young when I saw that, I think I laughed. Number 1 is "Terms of Endearment" and I must say, yep, it's a killer.

Old arts figures who might make good Dead Pool candidates. Remember, they are old.

First Saturday of the month and that means Showtime picks up boxing. This was the rematch of Israel Vazquez and champ Rafael Marquez at super bantamweight. The first fight was a classic, but what an entertaining bout this second fight was.

They didn't take too long to start trading blows. The third was the best round I've seen in a long time. Marquez got hurt by Vazquez and it backed him up a bit. Vazquez comes in for the kill, but Marquez, even with a cut flowing freely, gets his senses back and starts pounding on Vazquez. Then they traded the rest of the round. Big-time warrior stuff by both parties.

Vazquez had two really bloody cuts by the sixth, but was hanging in there. Marquez, who had been getting hit with the left a lot, got hit with another one and went down. Vazquez got on him again and they traded a bit, but it appeared for a couple of seconds that Marquez was backing up and he dropped his hands, so the ref stopped the fight. It was probably a controversial stoppage, but I am not really that upset with the decision. I am not saying that Marquez would have been knocked out, but clearly he had some issues at the end.

I'm sensing a trilogy.

I was running around like a madman today. It was a good day to prep the lawn for spring, so I did that this a.m,, because I had to go to a wake this afternoon. Nice day for a wake. Anyhow, one of my errands was at Walgreen's, where it appeared a driver ran off the road and struck one of their light poles. Who knows if he was drunk, but he did major damage to the car and the pole.

Then I ran over to Giant Eagle, where a blind woman was shopping with her family, I guess. She also had a dog, which was the first thing I noticed cruising my cart down the freezer aisle. Then I heard they were playing that old Bob Welch tune, "Ebony Eyes". I was singing along and I realized I this part was coming up:

"Your eyes got me dreaming
Your eyes got me blind..."

I didn't sing, but was that bad timing? The other part I found mildly entertaining, was that they let the blind lady pick out bags of frozen food. I don't know, could you notice the subtle weight differences being blind? Perhaps she insists on doing that and maybe she is not doing it for that reason, but it seemed odd that her cohorts wouldn't just grab a bag and toss it in the cart.

It's a curse, I notice these things.

Is anyone else as riveted as I am, about the OSU kids taking their trip to the BCS game? Why this is front page news, I'll never know. At first, we heard how they were going to "The Price is Right" and Tijuana. They did neither. How exciting. Whoever greenlit this should be forced to do a front page series on their next personal vacation.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of each year, I vow that I will clip coupons to become a better shopper. This usually gets boring by the Super Bowl, but the first foray to Giant Eagle in 2007, resulted in a few coupons for things I actually buy. Mostly on the meds side. You know, Tussin and the like. The idea of coupons is good until you find yourself with several containers of unused Country Time Pink Lemonade sitting around.

While gathering items for today's Big Breakfast, I picked up a Jimmy Dean Skillet that was on sale. With the new flavor of bacon. Mmmm...bacon. Anyhow, when I actually dumped this product into a skillet, I got the sense it was a smaller package. Indeed, having a package laying around from the previous sale, I noticed the price is the same, but the size is now 18 oz., instead of the regular 20. Pretty scandalous, I say. Especially for breakfast. If anything, it should be larger.

Showtime had last night's boxing card and I thought it kinda lame to kick off the new year. Good to see Steve Albert calling him the "Classy" Jimmy Lennon, Jr. again. And James Brown's band played the National Anthem, so life as a band goes on, it seems. I wonder if they have any singing or if it's all instrumentals now.

The bouts were Jose Antonio Rivera vs. Travis Simms for a belt at 154, and Samuel Peter against James "Lights Out" Toney in a heavyweight eliminator. Simple recaps: Simms whipped Rivera, making him a bloody mess throughout, finally taking him out in the 9th.

Peter almost threw a shutout at Toney. Toney allegedly trained with Billy Blanks of Tae-Bo fame for this match, even though he still weighed in at 234. Not exactly, a ringing endorsement. Blanks was actually in the corner, offering advice once. If I were trainer Freddie Roach, that would bother me. But it didn't matter, as Peter dominated and got a unanimous decision. Hard to believe I stayed awake.
